Plans for Educating for Sustainability: New in USA; Existing in Australia and Canada

In the United States, the Center for Green Schools and the US Green Building Council (who develop sustainable building to their LEED certification standards) have convened to create a timeline to 2040 for Educating for Sustainability.

It may be found in the National Action Plan for Educating for Sustainability, the full text of which is available HERE.

Australia published its first National Action Plan for Educating for Sustainability in 2000 and updated it in 2009 setting out a framework for local, regional and national action. Australia’s plan envisions reorienting educational systems, fostering sustainability in business, and harnessing the burgeoning community spirit to collaborate for sustainability.

Closer to home, this Educating for Sustainability report for the Canadian Council of Ministers of Education, prepared by the Manitoba Ministry of Education. It examines questions of EfS and includes broad surveys of EfS efforts in policies and priorities in educational administration, curricular integration and development, teacher professional development, and pre- and in-service EfS initiatives from throughout Canada. A more recent offering from the same administration is available HERE. The British Columbia Government outlines its plans HERE.

This site maintains a collection of links generally on the theme of educating for sustainability, find it HERE.

More anecdotally…here is a refreshing story from the States about a 5th grade in Guilford, VT that took a week of school to visit local farms, make a community video, map a forest trail, cook locally sourced meals, and create a theatrical performance about Guilford during the Civil War. Teacher Jen Kramer described as one of the most profound teaching experience of her career. And it’s not just a one off week of activity, Kramer’s classroom regularly includes place-based curriculum from mini-activites to multi-week units and year-long themes.

And from British Columbia be sure to not miss the – Growing Innovation supported – Sooke Nature Kindergarten for further EfS inspiration via taking education outdoors.
