Telling the Stories of the Nikkei

In a powerful example of a collaborative inquiry, teachers Terry Taylor and Gary Parkstrom and students in social studies and english at Lucerne Secondary School worked with film makers Moira Simpson and Catrina Megumi Longmuir and Japanese-Canadian elders to learn about the internment experiences of Japanese Canadians in New Denver during the Second World War.

Students created short documentaries based on visits to the local Nikkei museum and interviews with camp survivors still living in the local community.

The films were screened at New Denver’s Bosun Hall on June 6, 2010. UBC Students at the nearby West Kootenay Teacher Education Program created lesson plans for the school study based on British Columbia social studies and history curriculum.
